The cyclamen flowers C. persicum, grow mostly in certain mountainous districts of France, more especially in Savoy, and the fresh flower loses most of its odor after having been picked. When cultivated it has no odor but the wild flower has an extremely sweet odor, as fine as that of violet, but with a distinct character of its own. In preparing an artificial oil the following are chiefly used: ionone, linaloöl, terpineol, hydroxycitronellol, and phenylacetic aldehyde. By means of a new chemical body recently discovered a more true imitation of the odor of this flower has been produced.

Cyclamen is the name given to an exceptionally pretty genus of flowering plants which are found growing wild in the Alpine regions but are much cultivated in greenhouses in this country. They belong to the NO Primulaceæ and the Sowbread. C Europeum is one of the best known having reddish purple flowers the lobes of the corolla being reflexed. Some of the varieties of this species are very fragrant but there is little doubt that another species C persicum is the most powerfully scented odour of cyclamen recalls that of a bouquet composed of lilac and violets with sometimes just a suspicion of hyacinth. The principal constituents of synthetic cyclamen will therefore be hydroxycitronellal, ionone, linalol, terpineol, and either styrol acetate, cinnamic alcohol, or phenyl acetic aldehyde. The following formula will give a good imitation of the flower perfume:
